Investing in Place.Building Value for Generations.

We move patient, catalytic capital toward Indigenous- and community-led enterprises, shared assets, and place-based opportunities that build ecological resilience, durable local value, and long-term community prosperity.

The opportunity

Healthy places create lasting value.

Canada is well positioned to lead the transition to a regenerative economy, with ambitious climate, conservation, and biodiversity goals and communities already building the foundations for stronger regional economies. At the same time, capital is increasingly seeking nature-based, climate-resilient, and community-led opportunities.

The potential is significant: every $1 deployed through community-finance intermediaries generates approximately $1.20 in Canadian GDP on average, while Community Futures lending in Ontario has generated as much as $4.50.*

Our Focus in Canada

We work in Canada through a bioregional lens.

Salmon Returns Capital Canada works across the Canadian portion of the Salmon Nation bioregion, where watersheds, cultures, communities, and economies are deeply connected. We work alongside First Nations and regional partners to develop place-based enterprises, shared assets, and financial infrastructure that strengthen ecological resilience and keep value rooted in place.

Our Approach
01 / Systems approach

The Bioregion Is the Portfolio

We understand places as interconnected systems. Climate resilience, biodiversity, community wellbeing, cultural continuity, local economies, and community wealth are not separate impact categories. They reinforce one another because lasting value is created when the whole system gets stronger.

02 / Capital approach

Different Capital Has Different Jobs

If the bioregion is the portfolio, no single type of capital can finance all of its needs. Different opportunities require different forms of capital at different stages. When coordinated, each can unlock the potential of the others.

A braided capital ecosystem

Philanthropic capital
Can take risks conventional investors cannot.
De-risk + enable
Catalytic capital
Can make new models possible while preserving flexibility.
Prove + bridge
Community capital
Creates ownership, accountability, and long-term local stake.
Root + govern
Public capital
Can help build infrastructure and shared regional assets.
Build + anchor
Institutional + private
Can provide scale once models and systems are ready to grow.
Scale
Market capital
Can participate once the underlying systems are strong enough.
Sustain
Principle one

The appropriate unit of focus is the bioregion.

Value is produced by the relationships among ecosystems, culture, community, and economy—so capital should be organized around places, not isolated sectors.

Principle two

The appropriate strategy is a braided capital ecosystem.

Matching the right kind of capital to each job makes room for stewardship, infrastructure, ownership, experimentation, and scale to reinforce each other.

Platform + fund development

Capital for thenext economy.

We develop place-based capital strategies intended to support Indigenous- and community-led enterprises, shared assets, and regional opportunities that contribute to ecological resilience, durable local value, and long-term community prosperity.

The Salmon Returns Canada Fund Series is being developed as a series of separately structured vehicles that may support eligible opportunities as they emerge and mature.

Our team

Grassroots wisdom.
Financial expertise.

For more than 30 years, our team has turned ambitious ideas into organizations, financial tools, coalitions, and place-based initiatives. Through leadership roles at Ecotrust, First Power, Salmon Nation Trust, Sierra Club BC, Heritage BC and other mission-driven enterprises and organizations, we have worked alongside communities to strengthen local economies, build community and Indigenous power, and keep value rooted in place.

Across our prior work, we have managed and mobilized hundreds of millions of dollars for community-rooted impact and pioneered values-aligned financial tools, including the first fossil-fuel-free ETF listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Our advisory circle

Guided by a wider circle.

We are guided by a trusted circle of wisdom keepers, change-makers, and ceremony holders whose cross-sector experience supports innovation and collaboration across cultures, communities, and generations.
